Originally written for priests and seminarians in 1956, Guidance in Spiritual Direction is a clear and excellent presentation of the principles governing the spiritual life and spiritual progress. Of course, no one can be his own spiritual director as we can not judge ourselves objectively enough. But by reading Fr. Doyle's masterpiece, we can learn the principles of the spiritual life and we can better understand why our spiritual director tells us what he does. We can render ourselves better disposed to benefit from spiritual direction - and that would be a great grace.
Fr. Doyle quotes heavily (very heavily) from Sacred Scripture, the Fathers of the Church, and the Saints, making this an excellent book for spiritual reading.
